Does anyone really use poly crease?

Does anyone know if poly creasing that was added in maya 7 is actually used in production for anything?

I find it to be almost useless. you can add creasing up to a value of 2.0 but I find anything beyond .3 and you start to get just horrific shading errors.

Never the less I keep trying to find some place to use it and avoid having to add edges that have to be carried throughout my entire model to crease edges. I have found a few places where I can use it but for the most part I have delegated its use to proxy models.

Is there a writeup anywhere explaining what its intended use is really for because I can't see using it in an actual high quality model due to the unavoidable render artifacts it creates.

I know that vertex weighting is used a lot in packages like lightwave and modo and from what I have seen they have far less rendering issues with it then Maya does. It's almost like autodesk / alias added it in a hurry just to compete but did a really bad implimentation.

No, not that I know of. I avoid it like the plague, as it always creates errors, and is a pain in the ass to get rid of. Best to just add another edge, or bevel it.

yeah next, that has been my experience as well. In 2k10 you can reselect the edges and left drag to remove the creasing and it actually takes off the highlighting now.

But I still find it has very limited usefulness. Plus if you export your models to obj you lose all the creasing. It is for a similar reason I don't use sudb creasing. When you convert back to poly you lose all the sudb creasing.

I just wanted to get some feedback to see if anyone had found a use for it.

Thanks.

Nah, never use it, like to have the control myself.

I did give it a go on a character once for a test, on the eyes if I remember and exported it to Z, I was sure that it kept the crease, then again once I was in Z I didnt want/need it.
